Keratin Treatment 101: What to Expect and How Long It Lasts

Keratin treatments are one of the most-asked-about services we do, and also one of the most misunderstood. Here's a straightforward rundown.

What it actually does

A keratin treatment coats and fills the hair shaft with a protein (keratin, which hair is already made of), smoothing the cuticle and cutting down frizz. It doesn't chemically straighten curl the way a relaxer does — it reduces frizz and makes hair more manageable, while your natural texture still shows through, just smoother and with less resistance to styling.

What the appointment involves

Budget around two hours. The treatment is applied section by section, worked through the hair, then sealed in with heat (usually a flat iron pass through each section). It's a longer appointment than a cut or colour, but you leave with the result already styled.

What it's good for

  • Frizz-prone or humidity-reactive hair
  • Cutting down blow-dry time significantly
  • Hair that's hard to manage day-to-day but you don't want it poker-straight

Aftercare — this is what determines how long it lasts

The treatment needs to fully "set" before you wash or tie your hair up — we'll tell you the exact window on the day, but it's typically 48-72 hours. After that:

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo. Sulphates strip the treatment out faster than anything else.
  • Space out washes where you can — every wash gradually fades it.
  • Avoid tight ties, clips or buns in the first few days, which can leave a crease or bend in freshly treated hair.

Done well and looked after, a keratin treatment typically lasts 2-4 months depending on hair type, how often you wash, and the products you use.
